One question I get frequently from new friends and prospective clients is: “Why giraffes?” In other words, what’s the connection between the giraffe and my career coaching practice?
Fair question. Simple answer.
During a trip to South Africa, I had a chance to observe giraffes up close, and not only did I fall in love with them—I also recognized that the giraffe has traits that parallel all the characteristics we need for success. I elaborate in the short video above, but here are the traits in a nutshell:
- They lean forward with confidence. (For us, confidence means building on the successes of the past to frame our future.)
- They are flexible. (Flexibility is a must to navigate change successfully!)
- They have treetop vision. (When we look to the horizon and see the big picture, we can see our place more clearly. We can also see what’s coming and plan for it more easily.)
And there you have it! Of course, developing these traits requires practice and patience, and we elaborate much more on how to do it in our coaching sessions. But these traits are important because they will carry us through any life transition and career shift, not just the immediate need to find work.
